Holabird is a small town in Hyde County, South Dakota, United States. It has a population of around 335 people. It is located on the eastern edge of the state, about 40 miles east of Pierre, the state capital.
The town was established in 1880 as a stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and was named after the railroad's chief engineer, William P. Holabird. It grew as a center of agricultural trade, with farms and ranches in the surrounding area producing crops and livestock.
Today, Holabird is a quiet rural community, with a post office, a volunteer fire department, and a small school district that serves students from nearby towns. It is also home to the Holabird State Bank, which has been in continuous operation since 1909. The town's economy is largely based on farming and ranching, as well as hunting and outdoor recreation.
Holabird is located near several popular tourist attractions, including the Missouri River, Lake Oahe, and the Badlands National Park. It is also home to the annual Holabird Hustle, a 5k and 10k race that draws runners from across the region.
